Frequently Asked Questions

Hydrogen

  • How is hydrogen produced?

Different processes for the production of hydrogen exist, an overview is provided in this article. The products of GRZ are suitable for hydrogen from any source.

  • Is the use of hydrogen safe?

The use of hydrogen of an energy carrier can be very safe, equally safe or safer to other fuels. GRZ's DASH technology as a particularly safe form of hydrogen storage even allows for the storage of the fuel within buildings.

  • Is hydrogen a clean fuel?

Hydrogen generated with electrolysis from a renewable source is a clean fuel. During combustion, only environmentally bening water is created as a byproduct.

DASH

  • How does the DASH Power system compare with conventional batteries?

The DASH system is more compact than an Li-ion battery with an equivalent capacity. Furthermore, the DASH system requires around 90% less grey energy than a Li-ion battery. The levelized cost of storage are lower than those of a battery under certain conditions (e.g., long duration storage > 10h). Each case has to be analyzed specifically.

  • What is the overall efficiency of the DASH Power system?

The storage of hydrogen in the DASH process is extremely efficient. The heat exchanger required for the absorption and desorption can be made with ambient surroundings or using waste heat at ambient temperature. The only loss incurred in the storage process is a drop in hydrogen pressure, e.g., from 35 bar(g) to 15 bar(g). The efficiency of the production process depends on the electrolyzer and ranges from 60% to 85%. The efficiency of the combustion depends on the fuel cell and ranges from 45% to 65%. The round-trip efficiency in power-to-power applications ranges from 30% to 50%. The efficiency should be put in prospective of the excess energy available from renewable sources.

  • Is the DASH Power System commercially available?

Yes, DASH Power systems are commercially available. We are looking forward to receiving your inquiries on sales@grz-technologies.com

GRZ Products

  • What is the composition of the metal hydrides used?

The exact composition of the metal hydrides used is not disclosed. However, the materials do not contain any critical elements such as cobalt or lithium. The metal hydrides used are based on titanium, iron, manganese, and other similar elements.

  • What is the lifetime of the GRZ DASH and HyCo products?

The absorption and desorption of hydrogen in metal hydrides is a fully reversible process as long as the hydrogen quality meets the specified requirements. In-house tests have indicated that over 15’000 cycles can be done without degradation. Therefore, the service lifetime of the DASH storage is expected to be over 20 years. Auxiliary components of the system (pumps, fuel cell, sensors, etc.) might have a more limited lifetime and can be exchanged at defined intervals.
